The Marina Public Art Ad Hoc Subcommittee was established by the Recreation and Cultural Services Commission on May 6, 2009 through a request from Candy Myers-Owen. Its purpose is to relocate 8 sculptures formerly located as The Sculpture Habitat at the Marina Municipal Airport, and re-establish a public arts venue named “The City of Marina Sculpture Garden” (TCOMSG). The Sculpture Habitat had to be dismantled due to the Marina Coast Water District’s directive when they took the water tower down on the habitat site. Since that time almost two years ago, the sculptures have been stored at The Monterey Sculpture Center. Many of these pieces have belonged to the City of Marina, while some are on permanent and semi-permanent loan. The lower park area of the 4.8 acre Vince DiMaggio Park, which is an under-utilized, grassy passive park, has been accepted by the City of Marina as the permanent location for “TCOMSG” after a complete site study analysis of eight different locations. The completion of the upper park area of Vince DiMaggio Park, including the community building, allowed the committee to present the lower park plan to City Council as part of the entire Park plan. It was accepted unanimously. The ad-hoc committee is in the process of finding “in-kind” donors for work that needs to be done, as well as doing grant writing. The total project’s cost is $90,000.00. Our goal is for completion at the latest by January 2012. To date, the city has received a $10,000 grant from the Monterey County Regional Parks District, and a landscape/site plan that has been donated by Michael Bellinger of Bellinger, Foster, and Steinmetz. The committee is currently seeking a grant from The Arts Council for Monterey County in the amount of $5000.00. Plans going forward will be to write grants to other Foundations and Arts organizations. As the Marina Police Department provides two members that sit on our ad-hoc committee who are well-versed in CEPTED Practices, we also plan for the Police Department to apply for a grant from CEPTED.
Attached is the initial landscape and site plan of Vince DiMaggio Park. Selected photographs of the sculptures are below:
